ALEX HAVEN IS A WORLD CLASS JAZZ SAXOPHONIST
To Alex Haven, music is about making a joyful noise. There is no room for ego’s or nonsense once the downbeat drops, only a joyous and open exploration of the music. To Alex Haven music is love.
Alex Haven’s soulful tenor saxophone has performed and/or recorded with Mike Clark, Paul Jackson, Fred Wesley, Larry Goldings, Bill Summers, George Porter Jr. , Maceo Parker, Oz Noy, Jerry Z, Jamiroquai, De La Soul, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Richie Havens, and Jaques Lesure, to name a few. But it was after meeting and playing with Richie, that Alex was inspired to pick up the guitar and start learning to play in the style of Richie Havens with an open D tuning and his thumb over the fretboard. It was a combination of this and the fact that Alex resonated so deeply with Richie’s selfless and giving approach to music that he adopted the stage name Alex Haven, which Richie joyously blessed when Alex approached him about it.
While living in NYC, Alex Haven led the NYC Boogaloo All-Stars, which featured guitar phenom Oz Noy, Hammond B3 burner Jerry Z (Melvin Sparks, The Headhunters, Fred Wesley) , and drummer Andrew Atkinson. When he moved to LA, West Coast Jazz Promoter Michael Dolphin, started to frequent his Jazz performances, and introduced him to legendary guitarist Jaques Lesure (Jimmy Smith, Stanley Turrentine), whom he frequently plays with.
